State Food Stamp Programs

Summary of State Food Stamp Programs

Each state receives federal government money for their Food Stamp programs. Every state does have a web page available to the public that provides application, eligibility, and regulation information.

Because each state manages their own food stamp program and web pages, there is a lot of variation that is provided on the web pages.

State Program Names

Congress changed the official name of the Food Stamp Program (FSP) to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in 2008. Since then, states can use either name or a name they select.

A majority of the states use the new name of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Other names being used include the Food Stamp Program (FSP), Food Assistance Program, Food Supplement Program, or some other name.

All of the states' provide printable applications and about half of them offer online applications. Most of the states' Food Stamp web pages provide policy manuals and online statistics. Some states' go even farther and provide eligibility screening tools and benefits calculators.
